Thank you Tucson, The University of Arizona, Phoenix, and the Southern Arizona Community for showing up at the museum Saturday, January 14, 2023, there were more than 350 people present! Thank you for your support and sharing your knowledge with us! We are excited that the museum has already begun making connections in the community and some have stretched to both ends of the United States!

Thank you to the Facilities Management team who we could not have done this without you…Chris, Charlie, Steve, David, Yoda… 🙂 Rog and everyone on that team!

MLK March and Celebration in Tucson

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is excited to announce “Together We Can Be THE Dream” as the selected theme for its 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. March. 

Please be reminded that In 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a national day of service, and marking the third Monday in January every year as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service – a “Day On, Not a Day Off.”

The March will start at on MLK, Jr. Way (Kino Parkway & 36th Street). Starting time 8:30 AM and end at Reid Park Celebration will be from approximately 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

UArizona Lady Cats Visit Museum!

On December 13, 2022, the Arizona Women’s Basketball head coach Adia Barnes and the team was given a private tour of the soon to be opened African American Museum of Southern Arizona (AAMSAZ) located on the University of Arizona campus. Thomas Harris, UArizona Associate Athletics Director, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement coordinated with Beverely Elliott, AAMSAZ Executive Director to schedule the visit. The purpose of the tour was to introduce the team to the museum and educate them about some of the Southern Arizona history. This was all a part of the PAC 12 HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University) initiative!

Ruby Bridges Fireside Chat

On Thursday, November 17, 2022 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to assist AAMSAZ in serving our community by assisting at the Ruby Bridges Fireside Chat. We were able to provide the Southern Arizona Community with an impactful event that made history with her-story! Learn more with the following information provided below, as well as viewing the following photos of the event provided by Joe Jackson.

  • Almost 1,000 people were inspired at Palo Verde Magnet High School in Tucson as Ruby Bridges told her story from the lens of a 6 year old being escorted by Federal Marshalls to Franz Elementary!
  • Welcomes were done in English, Spanish and an Indigenous Language to honor the land where the museum is located on the University of Arizona campus in the Student Union room 244!
  • Jimmy Hart, Director of African American Student Services invited over 300 students and families and was also a sponsor for the event. Some students were selected to ask Ruby a question.
  • Eric Brock, Principal at Palo Verde (PV) was our gracious host.  PV’s staff of Ray, Denise and Vanessa Eastman and her wonderful students who volunteered were outstanding!  
  • Tina Johnson, an advisory member, and our lead volunteer did an amazing job coordinating volunteers, making sure our Kindred Librarians were settled as they gave away over 100 books to the community by Black Authors!
  • Thank you Liana Sharp and United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona for your volunteers and leadership in working with Tina so that things came off beautifully!

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

The Museum encouraged schools throughout Southern Arizona to join in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14, 2022!

Our Title Sponsor,AAA, informed us that over 380,000 students participated in the walk to School Day in 46 states, and 1,100 schools registered and participated.

In Southern Arizona, over 15 schools participated in the walk from various school districts including Tucson Unified School District’s White ES, Miles K8, Manzo ES, Carrillo ES, Pueblo Gardens ES, Robins K8, and Erickson ES along with a select group from Bueno HS, City HS, and Agua Fria.
